Enigmo Review
Ok let’s start off the review with what the game is…
This game was created by Pangea Software Inc – the guys who got me into games and through my first 6 grades. Well they’ve come back to port over not one but 2 of the games I grew up with however, this review is to talk about Enigmo. Enigmo is a puzzle game where you have to get 40 water droplets into that looks to be an urn. The puzzles become more difficult as more coloured water droplets are added in. You are given a limit to the stuff that you can use to create the puzzle In total there are 50 levels with over 300 downloadable levels that are user created.
So as of writing I have not completed the entire game but I think I got the jist. The game can get pretty intense when your brain starts trying to minimize the total time that it takes you to complete the level so you can maximize the bonus points you receive.
Each level starts out with an overview of the level really using OpenGL ES’ capability to the max and using the built in audio engine to simulate surrond sound. It takes your general location and where the sound is coming from and the engine creates where the sound should be coming from. This is really awesome and weird when your listening to the game through headphones. The user interface is nicely done but I found that when I was rotating the parts sometimes it would bring up the menu, which was a little annoying, but I pushed past it.
The glitches in this game, are to say helpful because sometimes a droplet will go through where two walls meet and I found ways to work this to my advantage.
I think overall the best thing about this game is the gameplay, I mean the OpenGL ES graphics engine makes the game look great and the audio engine makes the surround sound crazy but the gameplay is my favourite part – big surprise there – however I the part of gameplay I enjoy most is the amazing physics engine. I mean it really shows off what the iPhone can do. I highly suggest you go pick this game up. Hours of fun waiting to happen.
Overall Grade: 4.5/5
//Edit: A quick thing I forgot to mention was that Enigmo received the honour of, “Best iPhone Game,” at Apple’s WWDC ’08.
