First of all: Great post! For me as new user this is really awesome. I like the keyboard short cuts a lot (I'm a keyboard man ;-)).

@tomato
You are right! When I saw the timer I instantly thought of the pomodoro technique. It would be great, if THL could count my pomodoros, but I will use it anyway so put this feature request into "Someday" ;-).

THL is elegant and mostly intuitive, but right now it does not fit well for one of the best and simplest productivity systems ever devised - Pomodoro Technique. Only small changes are needed to make it an ideal tool for Pomodoro users.

1) Make Estimates for tasks not only in hours and minutes but aslo Pomodoros numbers - indivisible units (of usually 25 minutes).
2) Create two vertical rows (in addition to existing Start and Due Date), namely Estimated Pomodoro number and Actual Pomodoro Number.
Optional two items that can make using it as timer are adding Ring at the end of Pomodoro and ticking sound when Pomodoro runs

Congratulations for this great post!
Now I know how to get the most out of THL!

Thanks!

P.S.: The "Mario" and "Star Wars" easter eggs are awesome!

You might want to email Don McAllister about that, from screencastsonline.com. He does great tutorials, and has already expressed interest in a THL show. Maybe if you remind him he'll do one.

If you really, really, really want one, and Don doesn't provide, I might consider doing one. It'll be nowhere the quality of his, though.

This didn't start out as a plug, but it has become one! There's a link in our sidebar if you want to subscribe to Don's screencasts, and we get a small kickback. I promise that I haven't been exaggerating, they really are that good.

I know those are the feelings of a lot of users, and I'm sure they would be for me if I had an iPhone OS device (which may be sooner rather than later).

I really wish they'd release the iPhone app. I love The Hit List (I bought the MacHeist bundle mostly for THL), but I reluctantly went back to Things so I can sync with my iPhone.

Awesome, this is the kind of explanation I was expecting to see. Now if they get the iPhone app going and locations integrated I will definitely be taking this over OmniFocus!

I bought Things from Cultured Code but I'm really looking at THL. Love your primer on the app.

Impressive summary, already liked the app, but liking it even more and excited about the potential of an iPhone app down the road.

Great summary! I'm learning to love The Hit List because of how frictionless it is to collect, process, etc., all my tasks. Sure, this is a long post, but this would work as a complete how-to guide for THL, which goes to show how simple it is to use.

Great post. Very informative and nicely organized. I've been using THL since the private beta and I learned a few news things from your post. Nice work.
