While the original Newton/Newton 110 both had only marginal (70% would be about right) text recognition), the Newton OS2.x vastly improved the speed and quality of recognition. My handwriting is abysmal but I always had pretty good success with my 120 and later my 2000. The sad thing is that the 2000/2100 were really nearly there. Subsequent development of compact flash and later SD, along with advances in battery technology would have likely resulted in Newtons more or less the size of Palm Pilots and color. The development of Graffiti was really a blot on the Newton since by the 2000 it was almost entirely unnecessary. Also note carefully: there was a virtual keyboard available. It was easily called up and easily used, useful for rarely needed characters.
