OWC - Other World ComputingOK, so before I start let me get the good old disclosure stuff out of the way. The wonderful folks at OWC were kind enough to ship over the bundle I’m about to talk about. It’s a 60 day review deal, but as you’ll soon read, I plan to purchase this from them. While we’re on the subject of the folks at OWC, I’d like to extend a huge thanks to both Grant and Eileen from OWC for getting everything setup and giving me the green light for this review.

Also, let me say up front, this is a long review. I wanted to really give this setup a good write up, so if you’re at all interested, please do keep reading, you can rant at me in the comments if you want!

The Problem to be Solved

As my friend Allison Sheridan (from the Nosillacast podcast, hosted over at podfeet.com) would always ask, “What problem are you trying to solve?” Well that’s a great question and I think the best way is to look at the typical situation most Mac users, particularly those with MacBook Pros, find themselves in. Socialite: The Power to be Social

Like most of you reading this post, I have a fairly worrying number of social media accounts: Facebook, Flickr, Google Reader and multiple Twitter accounts, which for some reason I feel the need to be constantly updated on. I think you realise you’re a social media addict when you meet someone in person and refer to by their Twitter handle, as @Chris… I mean Chris Wall will attest to!

Up until recently I’ve had to run a Twitter client (Tweetie, of course), an RSS reader, and then have Fluid SSBs for Facebook and Flickr, which meant a lot of dock real estate hogging and a fair bit of CPU and RAM usage too.

Then I found Socialite, formerly EventBox, from the lovely folks at Real Mac Software. I had a license of EventBox from a while ago, but the Real Mac Software gang kindly upgraded that to a Socialite license for no extra cost.

Today I was browsing my RSS feeds, getting notes together for this week’s IMP Live when I came across this story from iPhone Alley and it got me thinking about the relationship between Apple and AT&T.

The basic gist of the story is that Apple have released two new iPhone ads in the US, both of which highlight the fact that the iPhone (and subsequently AT&T’s 3G network) can handle voice and data at the same time, and giving real world examples of how this benefits iPhone users. What Apple does though, is to bring up the whole  which 3G network is better ‘battle’ in the ad, is this right, is Apple being paid off by AT&T?

1Password is All You Need

In this post not only am I going to tell you all about this amazing application, I’m giving you a chance to win 1 of 2 copies, kindly donated by the amazing folks over at Agile Web Solutions.

So, you have about a dozen email accounts, a list of forums longer than your arm, your online banking, all those must have members only sites and just about every other website under the sun that in some way wants you to remember some form of authentication to get through the gates. The simple, and by far the most insecure, way of handling this would be to have a single password to all these sites, even worse it’s a dictionary password or something so obvious even a dog could guess it (yes that’s right Beiju, I do mean you!)

So, the best way to handle all those logins is to have multiple passwords, all über secure and all so hard to remember you’ll have to reset your password on said site every time you visit, well that’s where 1Password from Agile Web Solutions comes in.
