I’ve been Fiddling, with Things

I have a confession to make… I’ve been fiddling.

Fiddling is not a principle of GTD. Not fiddling is in fact more of a principle than fiddling. You see, GTD is about a trusted system. A system that is ever changing is very hard to trust. I think I now trust this system, but I’d have to ask my subconscious about that.

The big change I’ve made is Things. (more…)

Goodbye Cruel Word: A Scrivener Review

Like most people born after the 70s, I’ve spent a great deal of time using a computer and, up until the past few years, the majority of that time was spent in a word processor. Although I don’t clearly remember the event, I do recall my third grade teacher taking us down to the computer lab for our first actual computer assignment.

Previous to then, all we would do was play educational games in Windows 98. You guys remember “Reader Rabbit”? Yeah, that was pretty much all that we did. But I digress. I remember the first thing we were instructed to do was navigate to the start menu and open WordPerfect 2000, that was the word processor that I used for the following 3 years. Sebastian succeeds with Dropbox

In the modern world most people have multipe machines that they work on (one at work, a home desktop and maybe a notebook). Trying to manage all of your files and folders can get very hard and complicated – for example; you’ve just finished creating the presentation for the CEO and you arrive at work but you forgot to email it to yourself.

Dropbox is the answer. Dropbox was started in 2007 and has a great and active community around it. Dropbox is a menu-bar app that syncs your stuff between multiple computers, from right inside the Finder. (more…)

Sebastian Succeeds with Cruz

Hi. I’m Sebastian and I’m a new blogger for IMP. I love free stuff and I haven’t paid for any software (other than iWork) on my Mac.

Up until a while ago, I was using Safari as my web browser of choice – mainly because it came pre-installed on my Macbook. I have recently switched to Cruz, a free browser from Todd Ditchendorf, the creator of Fluid.

Cruz is slick, fast and customisable, when you launch it for the first time it will look almost exactly like Safari. It”s when you go into the settings that you see the magic. You get some general settings like homepage etc. but one of the really cool things is the Appearance. There are 3 skins to choose from; Default (Grey), Mobile Me (olive) and HUD (black), I prefer HUD. You can also set the Spaces settings and even the window opacity. (more…)

What Will Got Done: A review!

Here I am going to deviate from the norm. Yes, I know what we really haven’t set a norm yet, having only had two posts, but they were both on a theme and I am going to explore a different aspect of that theme. Instead of Will Gets Things Done, this is What Will Got Done.

You may know that I’m in High school. You probably don’t know that I’m taking Journalism as an elective. One of our recent assignments was to write a review, so I decided it was a perfect way to earn some Geek Cred. I chose to review Twitter. So, without further ado, here is my masterpiece… (more…)

App Review: Remote

Remote is a simple application from Apple for your iPhone and iPod Touch that allows you to remotely control your iTunes library on your Mac or PC from your device.

Upon launching the application for the first time, you are greeted with a screen asking you to choose an iTunes library. The process is simple. You are assigned a passcode that you need to enter in your iTunes library. Once it’s been verified, you’re all set.

Now you’re ready to use the application. It’s laid out in the same way as the iPod application for the iPhone and iPod Touch. You have it all divided up into sections: Playlists, Artists, Albums, and more, along with a new feature: Search.

From there, you can control all of iTunes. You can play songs, movies, podcasts, and audiobooks. Then, once you’ve got one playing, you can create playlists, adjust the volume, or change other options: you have complete control.

Apple has really hit the nail on the head with this app. It is available as a free download from the App Store in iTunes or on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

Today I have for you something that is closely related to what I talked about last time. That connects well into the other announcement I have to make, so I’ll leave you at a cliffhanger. (Yes, they’re on my mind because of the 7th Son trilogy by JC Hutchins. You should really listen to all three, and/or go to 7thsonnovel.com for all that and more, including some fan fiction. Plug over.)

Anyway, back to me. You may have noticed that Keaton, the stealer of all my ideas as it appears, has had a theme to his blog posts. Yes, I know there have only been two, but they had a theme. Keaton’s area of expertise is opinion, he has his “Keaton On:” segment, and now I will have my own. The grand title: “Will Gets Things Done.” Yes, I am about to become one of those GTD freaks. Don’t worry, though. I’m the kind that loves to tinker with new workflows, so it won’t be all about how my way is the best way. (more…)
